Walk around almost any playground fenced with flat-top (tubular) fencing and you'll see the same story: bent top rails, gaps where pickets have been kicked loose, leaning panels. It's the default choice — and for a children's play area it's the wrong one.

Flat-top fencing is a ladder by design

The problem is built into the shape. Horizontal rails give small hands and feet exactly what they need to climb. Australia's barrier standards recognise this directly: horizontal climbable components are meant to be more than 900 mm apart, and any surface that could be used as a foothold must be avoided or steeply sloped (QBCC — non-climbable zones, AS 1926.1). Flat-top and tubular fences, with their top rail and mid-rails, hand a determined child a ready-made climbing frame.

It bends, and then it breaks

Thin tubular sections take a beating in a busy play area — leaned on, kicked, hit by scooters, balls and ride-ons day after day. Over time the rails bow, welds crack and pickets work loose. A bent, gappy fence isn't just ugly; it's a compromised barrier, and the repairs never stop.

And you can't really see through it

Rows of vertical pickets close up at an angle, creating blind spots exactly when a supervisor is scanning the yard from the side. Clear supervision is the whole point of a play-area fence — flat-top gives it away.
